Missing 3rd grade muscle memory might make 5th graders fake it... for three years. The Decimal Lie Part 3.

Our students gaps and misconceptions can simply be hiding behind their ability to use a trick. Because students are getting the answer correct, teachers do not recognize that the students' foundational understanding is only built on a trick. Tricks can work, until they don’t any longer. In this case, the lack of understanding is exposed in 8th grade, three years after the foundation is testable.
