Point Nine
When teachers say "point nine" this is purely positional. When students say, "nine tenths" this makes a connection. It gives the teacher an opening to ask, “do you want that written as a decimal, or a fraction?" A simple shift in language that strengthens the decimal-fraction connection every time it's said is powerful in the minds of our students. This video makes the case for a consistency in classroom language that leads to a payoff in number sense.
